Description: The Scheide Library, a distinguished private library
especially known for extraordinary holdings related to the period of the
invention of printing, the Renaissance and the Reformation, early Americ=
an
history, and music (especially J.S. Bach), is housed in the Department of
Rare Books and Special Collections at Princeton=92s Firestone Library. =20
Under general supervision of the Associate University Librarian for Rare
Books and Special Collections and in full collaboration and cooperation
with Library owner William H. Scheide, the Librarian is responsible for
arranging for the care, preservation and cataloging of all the books and
objects housed in the Scheide Library, advising Mr. Scheide on additions =
to
the Library, and encouraging and overseeing the research use of its
collections. In addition, the Scheide Librarian will undertake projects =
as
assigned by Mr. Scheide, and, with his collaboration, projects of joint
interest to Mr. Scheide and to the Department of Rare Books and Special
Collections. Such projects could include, but would not be limited to, a
catalog of early printing in the Princeton University Library, continuing
work on the catalog of the medieval manuscripts in the Princeton Universi=
ty
Library, research into particular items in the Scheide Library and/or the
Princeton University Library more generally, and the preparation of
appropriate bibliographies and indexes on topics of mutual interest to Mr.
Scheide and the Princeton University Library. The Scheide Librarian woul=
d
also participate as a full-fledged member of the professional staff of th=
e
Department of Rare Books and Special Collections, and would be expected t=
o
undertake occasional curatorial duties there, especially when Scheide
Library items are involved. Examples of these duties might include
teaching students about palaeography, bibliography, and the role of rare
books and manuscripts in scholarly research; working with the Friends of
the Princeton University Library; preparing exhibitions; serving on
committees; accepting duty assignments in the Department's reference
rotation; and developing ties with faculty with similar interests.
Qualifications: Graduate work required in a field of study especially
relevant to the strengths of the Scheide Library; Ph.D. preferred. Also
required: minimum of five years experience working with scholars and rar=
e
books in academic or independent research library; strong record of
scholarly activity related to history of the book and bibliography;
demonstrated ability to manage the practical aspects of a rare
books/manuscripts collection; demonstrated knowledge of rare book trade;
excellent interpersonal skills; ability to communicate effectively; worki=
ng
knowledge of Latin and major European languages; training in palaeography=
,
typography, and codicology. Familiarity with RLIN and MARC formats,
electronic databases, and digitization of texts helpful.=20
Benefits: Twenty-four (24) vacation days a year, plus eleven (11) paid

Salary & Rank: Salary and rank dependent upon experience and
qualifications.
