Actually, the "browning" is the result of the lignin in wood pulp
discoloring over time. The high acidity of a paper results in a brittle
paper that is extremely prone to breaking and fragmentation, hence all
those little triangular chunks of paper on library shelves and floors that
all of us are all too familiar with.
