A TROUBLED PARADISE
William Blake’s Virgil Wood Engravings

ON COLLECTING WILLIAM BLAKE
by John Windle.
This new essay by Professor R.N. Essick explores the context of Blake’s wood
engravings for the Thornton edition of Virgil printed in 1821. These
engravings have remained influential works in the history of British art and
their influence can be seen from Calvert and Palmer all the way up to Graham
Sutherland. The edition is limited to 512 copies, finely printed with
illustrations depicting some of Blake’s original drawings and proofs, and the
complete set of published prints. Copies numbered I-XII also have an original
wood engraving by Blake. These wood engravings had been cut from an original
edition of the Virgil and were pasted in an album given by A. Edward Newton to
Caroline Newton. They were removed, restored, and matted by Karen Zukor for
this book. The Afterword by John Windle discusses Blake’s books and prints and
gives tips on collecting Blake.
Publication is expected by January of 1999.
