New display in Special Collections

To any Ex-Libris members travelling to the Antipodes here is an opportunity
to catch the latest display in Special collections, Auckland central City
Library, Auckland, New Zealand.

Africa & -Dr Livingstone I presume-

The names of Livingstone, Burton, Speke and Stanley are intimately
associated with the exploration of the interior of Africa as are James
Bruce, Mungo Park and Richard Lander.

Whether these men charted African rivers like the Congo, the Nile or the
Niger, or visited fabled cities such as Timbuktu or Zanzibar, they were
always exposed to hardship and horrors, and although the stories of their
adventures made them famous, it was often at a price.

-To Timbuktu and Back : Africa Explored, 1600-1900- begins on 8 June 1999 in
the exhibition room of Special Collections, Auckland Central City Library.

A representative selection of materials will be on display, with a major
concentration on the 19th century. Items include an English translation of
an early Portuguese account by Lopez of travel into the interior of Africa
(1597), Mungo Park+s Travels in the Interior District of Africa (1799),
Richard Lander+s account of the Clapperton expedition (1830), William
Patterson+s journeys into Hottentot and Caffraria as well as publications by
Richard Burton, J. H. Speke and David Livingstone.

Highlights include original letters by Livingstone and Speke, an extremely
rare manuscript of Mandingo Arabic, and the impressive Portugalia Monumenta
Cartographia (1960), a publication containing numerous maps relating to
Portuguese exploration. This is the first time these huge books have been
displayed.

The exhibition runs from 8 June to 28 August 1999.
The exhibition room of Special Collections is on the Heritage (2nd) floor,
Auckland Central City Library, Lorne Street.
Hours: Monday to Friday 9.30 - 5.00 pm; Saturday 10.00 to 4.00 pm.
