Re: A Dard Hunter Biography

Hats off to you, Michael. That's gutsy, given today's earlier ultimatum by the moderator of this list. Not even the perfunctory "do not hit the reply button." See you in a . . . what was it . . . "a very long time."

 Dear EXLIBRIS member,

For Book Art enthusiasts, Oak Knoll Press, a scholarly publisher, has recently published -

"BY HIS OWN LABOR

 The Biography of Dard Hunter"
by Cathleen A. Baker
     **********************************

Dard Hunter (1883-1966) commenced his remarkable career in the book arts as a craftsman and designer in the American Arts & Crafts Movement. Despite the success of Hunter's avant-garde designs appearing in popular books and decorative arts produced by Elbert Hubbards Roycrofters, Hunter became intrigued by the ancient handcrafts of papermaking, typefounding, and letterpress printing. The philosophy that Hunter aspired to was to make books by hand, striving for the highest craft standards.

In order to attain this type of perfection, Hunter traveled the world between the two world wars collecting tools, equipment, raw materials, paper specimens as well as gathering firsthand knowledge about the making of paper. To this day, Hunter's writings form the cornerstone of our knowledge about paper history, technology, and materials. One of his books in particular is a classic reference "Papermaking: The History and Technique of an Ancient Craft."

With 76 pages of color and black & white illustrations, printed by the renowned Stinehour Press, Baker reveals for the first time the complete dimensions of this pioneering genius. We believe this will be the definitive work on Hunter.
