Probably Frank Chouteau Brown (1876-1947)..."active for a time as a
designer of bookplates, book covers and stage sets" (Artists of the Book in
Boston 1890-1910, p. 85). He also designed the border for "The Last Fight
of the Revenge," which was published by Houghton Mifflin, with typography
by Bruce Rogers.
Don't know for sure, but he's a good guess.
