Dear Susan - I don't know which works you consulted, but
perhaps the following might be useful:
DeRicci, 'english collectors', p.25 mentions Gilson's article in
the Transactions of the Bibliog. Soc. 1908 on the library of Henry
Savile of Banks and says the BM has 2 ms lists of his
library.
Fletcher, 'english book collectors', p.444, lists a sale of 3 Saviles,
incl. sir. henry, Sotheby & Wilkinson, dec. 1860/feb. 1861.
Hazlitt, 'roll of honour,' lists simply sir henry savile, provost of
eton.
good luck on your quest. Norman

beloning to Henry Savile
REPLIES BACK TO ME PLEASE AND NOT TO THE LIST
I have a copy of Pulton's Kalendar 1608 signed Henry Savile Jul 20 1609
in
the original calf with the initials HS blind-stamped on both covers. As
he
does appear in any works I have on English bindings and collectors, I
wonder
if any library has other books of the same provenance and, if so, which
of
the three Henry Savile's alive in 1609 this one might be. One might
assume it
is the great Eton and Oxford scholar but there were two other Henry
Saviles
(both scholars and published authors) at that time.
Thanks to anyone who can offer concrete information on this.
