Library Director
Founded in 1829, the Massachusetts Horticultural Society is a
member-supported organization, dedicated to encouraging and improving
the science and practice of horticulture and developing the public’s
enjoyment, appreciation, and understanding of plants and the
environment.
MHS seeks an innovative, entrepreneurial individual to reinvigorate one
of the oldest and most comprehensive horticultural resource centers in
the United States. The Society’s library collection holds more than
100,000 books, periodicals, botanical prints, seed catalogues, and
videotapes. The Library is renowned for its collection of books related
to early agriculture, horticulture, and landscape design, and
particularly for its rare book collection with holdings dating back to
the 15th century.
The Library Director will provide leadership and vision to guide this
library into the twenty-first century, lead the re-launch of the Library
at MHS’ new Horticulture Center at Elm Bank in Wellesley/Dover, MA. The
Director will participate in pending building renovations and work
closely with the Library Committee and staff to integrate the Library
with the educational activities of MHS. The Director must plan for the
Library to be a leading information resource center for gardening
enthusiasts, both amateur and professional.
The successful candidate will possess a Master’s degree in Library
Science from an ALA-accredited institution. The applicant will
demonstrate a record of progressively responsible administrative
experience in libraries, including skills in setting priorities and
long-range goals, marshalling resources, fund-raising, and developing
new programs and services. The individual we seek has a proven track
record of relationship building with local business, community, and
volunteer groups. Familiarity with computing systems and emergent
technologies is critical, as is the capacity to work in a collegial
