A few weeks ago, a certain person, who shall remain my husband, decided to try to get a copy of a book called _The First Rebel_, by Neil Swanson (1937). This book is a novelization of the life of Col. James Smith, my husband's ancestor. For some reason, it did not occur to him to speak to his live-in rare book expert about how to get an old book. He knew how to get books: you go to Barnes and Noble.com! I was aghast when he told me he had made this order without consulting me. Perhaps by accident, B&N left in the book the sales slip from the rare book dealer where they had purchased it, showing the original cost at $30.00. Their markup was $12.00, and postage and handling took it to $56.00. Had we gone directly to the original dealer, it would have been $35.00.
Since I had been meaning to do this anyway, today I tried searching all these sites to see which would get the best results. Abebooks was the clear winner, showing about ten listings for the book, including, the very first one, the listing from the shop where B&N purchased the book..... The others found only one or two or three copies--even though Bookfinder is suppose to search some of the other sites. Of course, with other titles, the results might be different.

addall.com searches a number of different search engines, like
abebooks, bibliofind, alibris, etc. but
http://www.bookfinder.com
searches more such search engines, and would be my first choice. Note
that with any of these metasearch engines, you may not find quite all the
books you would find if you search individually each of the sites they
index.
