Anent the matter of early American currency:
The American revolution overthrew the authority of the British crown and the
Constitution proscribed any system resembling the British peerage--"No title of
nobility shall be granted by the United States." It took longer to reject other
British inheritances such as currency, the British gallon, and the left hand
rule of the road, British vocabulary, spelling, and pronunciation. Many
inheritances remain, especially the language and literature. Can anyone cite a
book that recounts the rapid or gradual change from British to American
customs?
