POSITION: Librarian/Archivist I (Processing Archivist)
DEPARTMENT: Richard B. Russell Library for Political Research and Studies
PURPOSE AND SCOPE:
The Richard B. Russell Library for Political Research and Studies is a
department within the University of Georgia Libraries, which reports to the
University Librarian and which functions as a center for the study of
post-1900 Georgia politics and public policy in both the state and the
nation. Although the papers of the U.S. Senator Richard B. Russell are the
cornerstone of the Library, acquisitions include the papers of former U.S.
Secretary of State Dean Rusk, other U.S. congressmen, judges, governors and
state legislators, the records of state political and public policy
organizations, and the files and cartoons of journalists.
The Russell Library staff consists of the department head, three archivists,
and two other staff and is responsible for the acquisition, preservation,
and processing of permanent historical records according to archival
standards and procedures and for providing reference assistance to a variety
of patrons. The Processing Archivist is a member of the Libraries’ faculty
and reports to the Senior Archivist of the Russell Library, as a member of
the processing unit.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Collaborates in the processing of archival collections by carrying out
select processing activities; coordinating and participating with assigned
projects; preparing accession records, inventories and finding aids for
assigned collections.
Provides for the preservation of and access to photographic materials in all
collections by reassessing policies and procedures; selecting and
establishing an automated system of access; and maintaining current archival
standards.
Participates in the appraisal of electronic records in terms of content and
context by assessing relationship to textual records in the collection as
well as materials in other collections; provides for the preservation of and
access to electronic records in the collections by staying abreast of trends
relating to the medium through continuing education and consultation with
appropriate co-workers and colleagues.
Supervises an Archival Associate I (currently a temp. position) by providing
basic archival education (or training) in the arrangement, description and
preservation of original materials.
Assists with the administration of the preservation program by researching
and conducting select preservation activities for the department.
Collaborates in the development of automated access to archival holdings by
engaging in the creation of MARC records for item-level and collection-level
records using APPM and AACR2 and maintaining awareness of trends in
automating finding aids.
Provides reference service to the University community and the general
public by participating in staffing the department’s reference desk, by
developing and maintaining knowledge of collections within the library and
by providing tours and instruction as needed.
Participates in general departmental administration by contributing to the
planning and developing of special projects, functions and exhibits.
Maintains an awareness of current trends in the archival field by
participating in professional activities.
Maintains flexibility and awareness of changes in the department and
organization and contributes to the team effort by assuming other similar
duties and responsibilities as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Master’s degree or ALA accredited MLS (with archival concentration or
archival work experience preferred); Strong organizational ability; Working
knowledge of historical research methodology and experience with standard
bibliographic tools; Effective oral and written communication skills;
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with
co-workers, donors, and patrons; Knowledge of current cataloging standards
(AACR2, APPM, LC subject headings and classification, authority control, and
MARC 21); Experience with computer applications for archival collections
desired; Previous supervisory experience desired.
BENEFITS: Standard benefits package includes life, health and disability
