Because it may be of interest to others on the list, I can recommend A. & J. Cases in LA (310-216-2170). They make shipping trunks for scientific & other instruments, space capsules, & for a few booksellers. Virtually any shape or specification can be included, so they could make something sturdy for non-transport purposes, too.
