Re: Cataloguing MSS and printed books

The Pierpont Morgan Library catalogs all its holdings into a single
union catalog. The catalog currently includes records for medieval and
Renaissance manuscripts (ca. 1,400), literary and historical manuscripts
and letters (ca. 23,000), rare and reference books (ca. 91,000), printed
music and music manuscripts (ca. 16,000), master drawings and prints
(ca. 5,500), ancient Near Eastern cylinder seals, and art and cultural
objects. About 75% of the Library's holdings are listed in the catalog;
data conversion is still underway for the remainder. All records are in
MARC. The OPAC, which runs on Endeavor Information Systems' Voyager
2000.1 software, is currently available in-house only. A web version
will be offered to the public by the end of 2001.

RLIN contains records for most of the rare and reference books, and for
all the medieval and Renaissance manuscripts which have been cataloged
to date. Records for medieval and Renaissance manuscripts are also
searchable on the Library of Congress's NUCMC site
(http://www.loc.gov/coll/nucmc/nucmc.html). Records for literary,
historical, and music manuscripts will be loaded into RLIN's AMC file
(also accessible through the NUCMC site) by early summer. Almost all of
these manuscripts are described on the item level.

We are also involved in a collaborative project with the Index of
Christian Art to photograph, digitize, and create records for all
iconographically significant images in our collection of medieval and
Renaissance manuscripts. Records and images become available through the
ICA subscription database as they are generated. Within a year or so,
they will also be accessible through the web version of our OPAC.
