> Can someone help me identify an armorial bookplate?
I've had some help already. Armed with this new information, perhaps
someone can help me with the next step.

Sara Weber ways:
"The correct heraldic description of the arms on this bookplate would be, 'paly
of six or and azure, on a chief gules a fess dancetty argent,' which Papworth
lists as being the arms of the family name 'Blesset'. Papworth, however, is
only interested in British armorials, so I don't know if this would be related or
not."
Michael North, who is trying to find out more about a book-collector named
M. Jouvencel (who might be the same person named on the bookplate) says
the book itself may be listed in a sale catalogue, which the Grolier
Club owns...
"M. Jouvencel's library was sold at auction in Lyon, July 26-August 26, 1779;
it was a supplementary sale to that of Jean-Philibert Peysson de Bacot,
whose name appears on the title page of the catalogue."
The book itself is:
"The history of Rhedi, the hermit of Mount Ararat. An
Oriental tale." (No author given, but LOC lists a 1974
reprint and names the author as William Duff.)
London: T. Cadell, 1773.
2 p. l., 307 p. 18 cm.
If you happen to have access to the catalog, would you
be willing to check on whether this book is listed?
The book having been published in 1773 in London makes
it not impossible that it should have been sold in Lyon
in 1779. Of course we are all aware that "just because
he's Larry Bird and you're Tweety Bird... " ;-)
Michael North also says the place to look for the Coat of
Arms would probably be: Olivier, Eugène; Georges
Hermal; and Robert de Roton. "Manuel de l'amateur de
reliures armoriées françaises."
Paris: Ch. Bosse, 1924-1935.
LC Call No.: Z270.F8O4
LCCN: 25007458
If anyone has access to this "Manuel de l'amateur de reliures
armoriées françaises,"* would you be willing to look up
the Coat of Arms for us, and pass on whatever
information you find?
* Not to be confused with "Manuel Historique et Bibliographique de l'Amateur
de Reliures," which is about book-binding. (I add that because I was
temporarily confused, and my Oxford Hachette was not much help.)
