Two positions, Mellon Foundation grant-funded project, based at the
New-York Historical Society Library. Positions are funded until December
31, 2002.
1) Visual Materials Archivist
Description: Process prints, photographs, and architectural collections at
the New-York Historical Society Library. Create finding aids and
item-level databases and revise existing cataloging. Identify items
needing conservation or rehousing. Assist in overseeing the work of
support staff.
Qualifications: ALA accredited MLS or M.A. in Architectural History, Art
History, American History or related discipline; 2 years relevant
experience including the arrangement and description of visual materials
such as photographs or architectural records; database experience; ability
to work independently or as part of a team and to manage multiple complex
tasks simultaneously; ability to work comfortably and productively in a
complex work environment. Knowledge of American and/or New York history
preferred.
Salary: Salary commensurate with background and experience. Minimum:

2) Senior Visual Materials Archivist
Description: Oversee the arrangement and description of the New-York
Historical Society Library's print, photograph, and architectural
collections; ensure adherence to processing standards across collections;
establish workflow and production standards; determine priorities; train
and supervise staff in XML mark up and EAD. Process collections, create
finding aids and item-level databases and revise existing
cataloging. Identify items needing conservation or rehousing. Supervise
one archivist and support staff, including part-time students, interns, and
volunteers.
Qualifications: ALA accredited MLS and/or M.A. in Architectural History,
Art History, American History or related discipline; 5 years relevant
experience including the arrangement and description of visual materials
such as photographs or architectural records; supervisory experience;
knowledge of MARC format for visual materials, XML, and Encoded Archival
Description techniques; database experience; ability to work independently
or as part of a team and to manage multiple complex tasks simultaneously;
ability to work comfortably and productively in a complex work environment;
excellent written and oral communication skills. Knowledge of American
and/or New York history preferred.
Salary: Salary commensurate with background and experience. Minimum:

Located next to Central Park on Manhattan's Upper West Side, The New-York
Historical Society is a principal resource for the study of American
history and life. It is home to the recently opened Henry Luce III Center
for the Study of American Culture, which showcases the Society's museum
collections, and to one of the oldest research libraries in the
country. The New-York Historical Society Library has been affiliated with
the New York University Libraries since 1997. Its collections encompass
approximately 400,000 volumes; 7,000 linear feet of manuscripts, including
diaries, letters, and military, political and business records; and an
estimated one million items in its print, photograph and architecture
collections. The Society's visual collections are especially strong in
pre-1900 U.S. history and culture as well as the development of photography
and professional architecture in the United States.
