The celebrated San Francisco-based journal Fine Print: The Review for the Arts of the Book (1975 -1990) dealt broadly not only in its titular subject matter, the contemporary book arts, but also in the history of books and printing, typography, bookbinding, and related areas. Its many contributors included Martin Antonetti, Charles Bigelow, Frances Butler, Betsy Davids, John Dreyfus, Paul Hayden Duensing, Colin Franklin, Steven Heller, Janet Ing, Paul Needham, Stan Nelson, W. Thomas Taylor, Benjamin Vorst, and Walter Wilkes. The journal suddenly ceased publication (with volume 16 no. 3) in 1990 because of the unexpected ill health of its founding editor, Sandra Kirshenbaum.

Earlier this year, Sandra Kirshenbaum and her husband Noel Kirshenbaum turned over the remaining back stock of Fine Print for sale at Rare Book School and through the Book Arts Press. The earlier issues are, unfortunately, long out of print; but issues from the final six years of the journal are available from RBS, and these were perhaps the strongest in Fine Print's long and distinguished history.
