RARE BOOK CATALOGING PROJECT
NOTICE OF VACANCIES
The Buffalo and Erie County Public Library and the University Libraries of
the State University of New York at Buffalo are recruiting for positions to
be funded by a two-year grant from the John R. Oishei Foundation in
cooperation with the UB Foundation and the Library Foundation of Buffalo
and Erie County, Inc. The grant will support the cataloging of the rare
book collections at the two institutions. Two rare book catalogers will
function under a shared administrative structure designed to produce
consistent electronic rare book records for inclusion in the database in
the respective owning library as well as for a unified rare book catalog
for the WNY area. Staff will perform work at both library locations over
the two-year period.
RARE BOOK CATALOGER (2 POSITIONS)
Duties/Responsibilities. Create bibliographic records for rare books and
other rare material in non-print formats with proper attention to
bibliographic description, classification, subject analysis, and authority
control and to all current national and OCLC standards. Review and revise
OCLC catalog records with attention to bibliographic description,
classification, subject analysis, and authority control. Supervise work of
library clerks, including training, attendance, and performance reviews.
Assist in establishing priorities for the project. Maintain a current
awareness of national trends in special collections cataloging and make
decisions about integrating those changes into local practice.
Qualifications. A Masters degree from an ALA-accredited program or its
equivalent; two to three years of professional experience as a cataloger;
familiarity with USMARC, AACR2 as implemented through Library of Congress
(LC) rule interpretations, and national rare book cataloging standards; a
knowledge of LC subject authority practice; experience with the cataloging
module of OCLC; and reading knowledge of at least one modern Western
European language; willingness to work as part of a team and demonstrated
ability to work with speed and accuracy and to manage time effectively.
NB: These positions entail ability to: handle moderately heavy books, push
book carts filled with books, and work at a computer workstation for
extended periods of time.
Highly desirable: Reading knowledge of additional modern Western European
languages; experience with creating machine readable cataloging records for
non-book materials such as maps, photographs, prints and drawings; and
experience with the DRA or NOTIS integrated library systems.
Salary: $33,000 plus benefits including health insurance.
