Special Materials Cataloger
Mellon Foundation grant-funded project, based at the New-York Historical
Society Library. Position is funded until December 31, 2002.
Description: Create collection-level cataloging records and item-level
inventories for the New-York Historical Society Library's printed ephemera,
scrapbooks, and vertical files. Create collection-level MARC records in
NYU's GEAC Advance cataloging system, using AACR2, APPM, LCSH, and LC
classification, and create item-level inventories in local
databases. Perform authority research and subject analysis as needed.
Qualifications: ALA-accredited MLS; 2 years of cataloging experience,
including experience with collection-level cataloging; familiarity with
MARC format, RLIN or OCLC, and local automated cataloging systems;
experience working with databases; flexible and creative approach to
providing bibliographic control over a large and diverse collection;
ability to work independently as part of a large grant-funded project, and
to interact with a variety of library staff. Knowledge of American and/or
New York history preferred.
Salary: Salary commensurate with background and experience. Minimum:
$35,000. Attractive benefits package.
Located next to Central Park on Manhattan's Upper West Side, The New-York
Historical Society is a principal resource for the study of American
history and life. It is home to one of the oldest research libraries in
the country, which contains collections of printed materials, manuscripts,
maps, prints, photographs, and architectural materials, and to the Henry
Luce III Center for the Study of American Culture, which showcases the
Society's museum collections. The New-York Historical Society Library has
been affiliated with the New York University Libraries since 1997. Among
its special collections are numerous broadsides, menus, scrapbooks, sheet
music, vertical files, and other ephemera documenting the history of New
York and the United States.
