Is this possibly a printer's (temporary) bindng? I don't know the
specific book in question, but I have other volumes bound in printed
boards that have the title page information printed on the
spine and the outside of the boards, and "Directions To The Binder"
printed on the insides of the boards, along with gossip related to the
book, the series it was in, and the authors.

[Anne, Lady Hamilton], The Epics of the Ton, 3rd edition, London, by &
for C.& R.Baldwin, 1807.
It is in certainly original and contemporary boards, printed three
times "THIRD EDITION - THE EPICS OF THE TON - Price 7s 6d", in smaller
lettering on the spine and larger on the sides.
