New Mexico State University Library invites nominations and applications
for the position of Department Head for Archives and Special Collections.
The department has approximately 12,000 cubic feet of archival materials in
all formats and over 50,000 volumes. These collections focus on topics
relating to New Mexico, the American Southwest and the Borderlands covering
the 19th and 20th centuries.
POSITION DESCRIPTION: Reporting to the Associate Dean, the Department Head
for Archives and Special Collections has broad general administrative
responsibilities for the operation of the department. Specific duties
include: manage and develop 4 faculty and 10 FTE staff including students;
develop and communicate goals and objectives for the department; identify
priorities for collection development and preservation; formulate
procedures for acquiring, processing, and preserving collections; promote
use of the collections, donor relationships and grant support for the
activities of the department; implement digital processes and other
technologies for access and preservation of collections; participate in the
library's management group, taking a broad library-wide perspective while
representing the department's needs; serve on library and campus
committees. Works closely with the library dean and development officer in
a highly collaborative setting. As a member of the library faculty will
pursue an active and ongoing program of professional development, research,
and service appropriate for his/her rank at the university.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required: MLS degree from an ALA-accredited program, or a minimum of a
master's degree in a related field; minimum of five years of progressively
responsible professional experience which includes recent, successful
management of an archives or special collections unit; demonstrated ability
to work effectively as a manager; knowledge of archival theory and
methodology; experience with national standards in handling of manuscripts,
archives and rare books; experience acquiring, organizing and providing
reference service for archives, manuscripts, and special published
materials; excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills;
superior problem-solving and organizational skills; ability to work as a
member of the management group.
Preferred: Experience in developing, implementing, and administering
policies in support of user and departmental needs including strong public
services, collection development, donor relations, fund raising, and
technical processing programs. Demonstrated project management experience.
Experience with the development and implementation of digital initiatives
including EAD, imaging, and web-based applications. Knowledge and
experience in developing preservation and security plans. Successful
experience in writing and administering grants. Solid understanding of the
research university environment; a strong record of professional
accomplishments and commitment to ongoing development; additional graduate
degree in humanities or social sciences; and competency in Spanish.
POSITION INFORMATION: This is a 12-month tenure-track or tenurable at time
of hire position at rank of associate professor depending upon
qualifications. Salary: commensurate with qualifications and experience.
