Catalogue of Newly Imported Historical Reproductions from Books of
Slovenia

Earliest Slovenian Books by Primoz Truber: Catechism (KATEKIZEM, 1550),
ABECEDARIJ (1550) and
ABECEDARIJ (1555)

The three books reproduced in this volume stand at the beginning of the
Slovenian literature and culture. The protestant pastor
and preacher Primoz Trubar (Primus Truber) wrote and published the first
two Slovenian books, the Catechism and the
“ABC” in 1550. They were printed in Tuebingen, Germany. Trubar used
German letters in his first two books, but in the
second “ABC” published in 1555 he switched over to Latin letters. He
published the “ABC”s so that Slovenians could learn
to read and write in their own language.

Today the three books are preserved in one single bound volume in the
Vienna National Library. From this original the
reproduction was made, printed in four colors, so – although the
original is printed in black and white – the new volume shows
in detail the present state of the original books.

The new volume is an exact reproduction of the original (15.5cm x
11cm), hand-bound in leather, resembling the leather of
the original book, and richly hand tooled in a design taken from the
original, redesigned to suit this edition. There is an
accompanying book of commentary with two sections – the first a literary
history and the second a bibliography – in Slovenian,
English and German.

The new volume and the commentary are sold in an attractive hand-made
container. The edition was published in 2000 to
honor the 500-year anniversary of the first Slovenian books. Only 999
numbered copies were produced. Published by
Slovenska Knjiga of Ljubljana, Slovenia. Price - $380. ISBN
961-210-166-3.

Colorplate of the Enthronement of the Dukes of Carinthia (1480)

This is the earliest drawing of the enthronement of the Dukes of
Carinthia. This deluxe collector's edition contains a full color
reproduction of a colorplate from a large codex, The Austrian Chronicle
of 95 Seigneurs, preserved in the City Library in
Berne, Switzerland. Dating from the year 1480, the two-sided colorplate
is the earliest representation of the famous
enthronement of the Dukes of Carinthia. The enthronement was an ancient
rite, which lasted for seven centuries. A Slovenian
peasant, sitting on the Ducal Stone (in what is now Austrian Carinthia),
was approached by the new Duke. After a short
ceremony the peasant symbolically handed over the power to the new Duke,
signifying the consent of the people to be
governed. The ceremony was held in Slovenian and is considered to be
one of the earliest forms of democracy. The rite was
known to many important scholars of the time, including the humanist
Eneus Silvius Picolomini, later pope Pius II, and the
prominent 16th century French legal theoretician and historian Jean
Bodin, who introduced the ceremony into the theory of the
state. Through Bodin's work Thomas Jefferson learned of this ceremony
and it has been suggested by some scholars that the
practice influenced Jefferson's drafting of the U.S. Declaration of
Independence.

The edition contains an exact full color reproduction from the Codex
(31.5cm x 22cm) and, as a separate booklet, a
commentary in Slovenian, English and German regarding the history and
significance of the rite. Published by Slovenska Knjiga
of Ljubljana, Slovenia. Price - $150. ISBN 961-210-146-9.

Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (Atlas) by Abraham Ortelius (Circa 1612)

This is a stunning collector’s edition of maps showing the territory of
Slovenia from the famous atlas of Abraham Ortelius
(1527-1598) entitled "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum," which is considered the
first atlas of modern times. The first edition was
published in 1570 and many more editions followed until 1612 when the
last was published. The present edition reproduces
seven original pages (43.5cm x 59cm, 17” x 23”) from the Atlas, as it is
preserved in the National and University Library in
Ljubljana, Slovenia. There are five maps showing the territory of
Slovenia (and some neighboring regions) as it was presented
in the Atlas in the 16th Century. In addition, there is one map showing
Europe ("Europae"), and another showing the famous
Ortelius world map "Typus Orbis Terrarum." All the maps are in color
and suitable for framing. The maps are preserved in a
luxurious hand-made container. A booklet of commentary in Slovenian,
English and German is also included in the edition,
which contains information on Ortelius and his atlas. The booklet also
includes a portrait of Ortelius and the original title page
of the Atlas. This edition was limited to 999 numbered copies.
Published by Slovenska Knjiga of Ljubljana, Slovenia. Price -
$260. ISBN 961-210-131-0.

The Kunike Suite of Landscape Paintings (1825-1830)

The limited-edition Kunike Suite is the first set of prints issued in
the collection “Topographia Slovenica.” Landscape painting
in Slovenia was inaugurated by Janez Vajkard Valvasor in his famous
Topography of the Duchy of Carniola. Since that time it
has been an important focus of Slovenian artists, inspiring affection
towards the homeland and its boroughs and towns, its
monasteries and castles. This portfolio contains twelve prints suitable
for framing (14” x 19 ½”), six hand-colored and six
black-and-white, representing Ljubljana, Vitanje, Celje, Bohinj, the
waterfall of Savica, and Turjak. The original lithographs
were issued between 1825 and 1830, as part of a wider series of
landscapes, published by A. Kunike, a Viennese editor,
publisher and engraver. An 80-page catalogue entitled “Perspective of
Slovenia during the First Half of the 19th Century,”
written by Ivan Stopar, is included with the portfolio of lithographs.
It has parallel texts in English, Slovenia and German. Price
- $125. ISBN - 961-6172-09-3.
