RE: "Death of the book"

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE FUTURE OF LIBRARIES by Gregg Sapp (Scarecrow, 2002)
is an anlysis of several hundred references to books and articles that cite
F.W. Lancaster's vaunted TOWARD PAPERLESS INFORMATION SYSTEMS monograph of
the late 1970s. Citations run from 1978 through 1999 and have brief
abstracts, as well as analytical chapter introductions, and a summary of the
literature before 1978. A review of Sapp's book will appear in the Fall
2003 issue of LIBRARIES & CULTURE.
I found most interesting a 1999 piece by Lancaster that contains his
"second thoughts" about the validity and desirability of his predictions.

I would be grateful for citations to articles, essays, etc., that
readers believe present especially well-reasoned (and hopefully
concise) arguments for or against the proposition that digital media
are making the printed book and/or the physical library obsolete.

It's not my intention to start a debate on this issue on Exlibris
(others may do as they wish). The only information that interests me
at the moment is those citations. Both online and print citations are
welcome. Thanks in advance...
