One of the best short analyses of the topic is by Charles Scribner jr. (published by Publishers Weekly in the ?1980s). He began his examination of the topic with the computer & digital means, and the like. He "discovered" curious objects, printed on thin slices of arboreal matter containing much information, easy to hold in the hand, to carry, to reflect upon, &c. (It is Mr. Scribner who solemnly said that we must always do sober what we said we would do when drunk; it will learn us to mind what we say).
