We are pleased to announce the release of our newest antiquarian
catalogue, issued Spring 2003: CATALOGUE 40, AMERICAN LAW TO 1860.
Please contact us directly for a print copy of the catalogue.

CATALOGUE 40, AMERICAN LAW TO 1860 consists of 280 items relating to American Law
published from 1715 to 1860. Legal works from this period offer a fascinating portrait
of our country as it developed from a group of colonies to a unified nation. Limited at
first to practical manuals for local officers and justices of the peace, the literature
of American law evolved to include codified laws, the United States Constitution
and sophisticated treatises on jurisprudence. Many of these echo the pivotal
debates over founding principles that led to the Civil War. They also contributed
to the development of legal education in this country. Beginning with Litchfield
Law School founded by Tapping Reeve in 1782, law schools emerged, brought these
issues into the classroom and generated a canon of law books. This catalogue
includes many important books, such as the first edition of Joseph Story’s
Commentaries on the Constitution of the United States, the first American
edition of Coke on Littleton, an uncommon copy of the Conductor Generalis
printed by James Parker in 1764, Hening’s New Virginia Justice and Statutes
at Large, several interesting justice of the peace manuals, important early
editions of Blackstone’s Commentaries and The Federalist, significant works
on slavery, Indian laws and treaties, early compilations of laws of Massachusetts,
New York, New Jersey, Rhode Island and Connecticut, a selection of fascinating trials
and works by leading figures such as James Kent, Francis Lieber, Edward Livingston,
Samuel Freeman and James Wilson, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence
and the United States Constitution. We have also included a selection of relevant
Lawbook Exchange publications and useful reference works.
