It also sounds like "when an old person dies, it's as if a library has been destroyed by fire", sometimes attributed to Arthur Haley, but more widely as an African proverb.

Subject: A question from a list lurker
Greetings. I'm bravely stepping out of my lurker mode
to ask for a wee bit of assistance. I've checked a few
resources without much luck, and am probably exposing
myself here as the amateur I am.
I came across a quote a few weeks ago that I can only
paraphrase from memory: "When a person dies, so does a
world". I am searching for the author, and perhaps as
a bonus, information on the source material.
Any help would be sincerely appreciated.
Back to my lurker corner,
Sue Willis
