SPECIAL COLLECTIONS LIBRARIAN: COORDINATOR OF TECHNICAL SERVICES/ORIGINAL CATALOGER, Mandeville Special Collections Library.
Preferred appointment level: Assistant Librarian - Associate Librarian with an approximate salary range of $37,920-$49,224.

Responsibilities of the Position
Reporting to the Director of the Mandeville Special Collections Library, this position has primary responsibility for coordinating and supervising the library's acquisitions, cataloging (original, copy, non-book, and serials), quality control, and catalog maintenance. Supervises and trains MSCL staff involved with these functions. Responsible for original and complex copy cataloging of MSCL materials, including non-book formats, and may contribute authority records to NACO. Utilizes special cataloging guidelines, thesauri and reference sources. Monitors trends and maintains currency in emerging issues in bibliographic control, information organization, and metadata standards. Represents MSCL on the librarywide Cataloging Committee.
Provides intellectual leadership for emerging issues in metadata. Responsible for creation of metadata for MSCL digital objects, in consultation with the Libraries' Digital Library Program. Participates in the creation and development of MSCL priorities, policies, procedures, and goals, especially the development & updating of cataloging & other technical services policies and procedures. Serves on appropriate librarywide, campuswide, and/or systemwide committees. May act as department head, in the absence of the director of MSCL.
Participates in MSCL's public services programs through regular hours at the MSCL reference desk; depending on subject expertise, may also be asked to participate in the development of exhibitions, and in the interpretation and promotion of MSCL holdings to the campus, scholarly, and public communities, through oral presentations, written papers, and digital initiatives.
May be assigned collection development responsibilities, depending on subject expertise.
UCSD Librarians are expected to participate in librarywide planning and professional activities appropriate to their position.
Required Qualifications
* Professional degree from a library school or other appropriate degree or equivalent experience in one or more fields relevant to library services.
* Experience cataloging rare books, manuscripts, and other special collections materials in an academic research library using AACR2, LCSH, LC classification, DCRB, and MARC 21 formats.
* Experience using integrated library systems.
* Experience directing the work of others.
* Reading knowledge of at least two western European languages, preferably Latin and Spanish.
* Knowledge of the special features of rare materials sufficient to evaluate and describe a wide variety of notable characteristics related to illustrations, bindings, genres, book production, and provenance.
* Demonstrated awareness of national and international trends in bibliographic and authority control.
* Awareness of research methods to facilitate the connection between information organization and information need.
* Public service experience in an academic research library.
* Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
* Ability to work cooperatively in a fast-paced environment, identifying problems and offering creative solutions.
Desirable Qualifications
* Academic specialization/advanced degree in history, literature, art history, history of science, or anthropology.
* Experience in cataloging a broad range of graphic, electronic, realia, serial, & other non-print materials.
* Experience in research and writing using primary resources.
* Experience in providing specialized reference service in an academic special collections environment.
* Familiarity with established and emerging metadata standards.
