I have a copy of Samuel von Pufendorf's De officio hominis et civis juxta legem naturalem libri duo, ..., Francofurti ad Moenum, 1734, which came from the library of William R. Smith, the grandson of William Smith of University of Pennsylvania fame, etc. The title-page of the book has a signature which reads: C.C. Saur, 1738.
Given the Smith family's Pennsylvania origin, I have a number of questions which I have not been able to answer satisfactorily over the years.
Is that "Saur" name in any way associated with the printing family?
Were there a lot of "Saur's" in Pennsylvania?
Does the signature associate the book with a member of the Saur printing family?
I am attaching two images, one of the title-page (which has the signature), and a close-up of the signature.
If anyone can help me decipher this, I will be most grateful.
Sam Gatteño
