The American Antiquarian Society has over 2,000,000 original pre-1877 American newspapers in its collections. Unfortunately we have not had time to index the contents of the collection (there's just me and one assistant). We have purchased indexes to specific titles that have been prepared by local historical societies. The rule of thumb is that older newspapers tend to get indexed first. Your best bet is to contact local libraries and historical societes. There are a lot of unpublished indexes out there sitting in notebooks and card catalogs. It just takes a bit of digging to locate them.

Subject: Re: Newspaper Indexes
Where can I find a list of American newspapers that have indexes of
their content? I know the New York Times does, but I am especially
seeking indexes to tabloid type newspapers of the 1920 - 1980 period to
research local book censorship trials across the United States.
Thank you.

Sir,
Here's three links for you, in case you haven't seen them. The Library
of Congress and the University of Nevada web sites provide lists of
newspaper indexes and archives. However, most indexes listed do not
cover the period you are reseaching. The American Antiquarian Society
has many old newspapers, but I don't know if their contents have been
indexed.
