Re: provenance query

Dear Sam,

unfortunately I cannot give an extensive answer to your query about C. C. Saur, but perhaps some hints could be helpful to come further on.

By biographical search I didn't find any person, who matches exactly with "C. C. Saur 1738".
(Your scans had been cut off. Can you put them somewhere on a website?)

The founder of the Germantown printing house and his son had the first name Christoph(er) (I and II). A second "first name" (could one say this?) isn't mentioned anywhere. Their surname was "Sauer", later "Sower". But sometimes it could also be written "Saur"
Christoph Sauer I (1694 - 1758)
Christoph Sauer II (1721 - 1784)

In the "American Biographical Archive" you can find some texts about the Sauer's. Please look there for "Sower".

At the Library Company of Philadelphia there is located a collection of printed works of the Sauer family. Perhaps there is archival material, too.(?)

With greetings from Germany,
