Working in a team environment, the Curator of Literary, Natural History and
Rare Book Collections/ Coordinator of Electronic Services performs
functional and curatorial duties in support of Archives and Special
Collections programs. The incumbent works in close cooperation with the Area
Head, other curators and staff to plan and establish area goals and to
ensure that established collection and public service goals are met. He/she
acquires new materials and provides reference services for collections in
his/her curatorial area and serves on the Archives & Special Collections
reference desk. The incumbent provides a leadership role in planning and
developing electronic access to archives & special collections, serving as a
rights manager and serves as a liaison with Information Technology Services
in the development of electronic systems, software and services. Occasional
evening and/or weekend hours are required
Minimum qualifications include: ALA-accredited graduate level degree and
three years post-MLS experience in working in archives and/or special
collections; sophisticated knowledge and use of database management
software; experience in developing digital collections in a library
environment including knowledge of standards for digital capture and
appropriate metadata; knowledge and experience in web design and development
using HTML, XML and XSLT; demonstrated ability to work effectively and
diplomatically with a diverse group of researchers, donors and staff; and
excellent oral and written communication skills..
Preferred qualifications include: subject knowledge of one or more
curatorial areas; knowledge and experience in web applications development;
evidence or scholarly and professional achievement; knowledge of
bibliography and history of the book; graduate degree in humanities or
social sciences ; active library and/or archival involvement at the national
or regional level; successful students, volunteers and grant staff
supervisory experience; and experience in an academic research library.

Compensation: The hiring range for this position is $45,000 - $57,830.
University benefits include 22 paid vacation days/year, 12 paid State
holidays, health and retirement plans, and tuition reimbursement.

Job Summary

Duties and Responsibilities
1. Collection Responsibilities
· Works with donors and dealers to acquire literary and natural history
collections, including rare books and little magazine collections
· Responds to in-person, written, telephone and e-mail questions from
researchers seeking information or support on literary, natural history or
rare book collections.
· Pro-actively encourages use by University of Connecticut faculty and
students of collections in his/her curatorial areas.
· Serves on the Reference Desk, including instruction in the use of
materials and facilities to the public, on a regular schedule.
· Plans and implements exhibits based on the incumbent's curatorial
responsibilities.
2. Electronic Resource Development Responsibilities
· Responsible for area website development and creation and maintenance of
area web pages.
· Provides a leadership role in developing electronic projects involving
literary, natural history or rare book collections.
· Develops and writes grant proposals supporting collection-related
electronic projects.
· Serves as the area coordinator on software and hardware issues and
communicates area needs and concerns to ITS staff.
· Develops expertise in specialized standards including XML, JPEG2000, EAD
and other emerging standards and shares his/her knowledge and experience
with area staff members.
· Works closely with the Digital Collections Librarian and area curators in
the development of digital content management software for area-specific
uses.
3. Rights Management Responsibilities
· Serves as the literary executor of the Charles Olson Estate, including
negotiating publishing contracts and granting permission to publish.
· Serves as the literary executor of the Edwin Way Teale Papers, including
negotiating publishing contracts and granting permission to publish.
· Serves as the specialist and resource person for copyright and rights
information on other collections in his/her curatorial areas.
4. Area Program Development Responsibilities
· Works closely with other members of the Archives and Special Collections
team to plan for the functional area's operations, to ensure that area goals
and objectives are met and to achieve an efficient and collegial team
environment.
· Attends professional conferences, workshops, and meetings as necessary.
· Maintains current awareness and attends appropriate training to keep
abreast of technology development, management and support issues.
· Assists in the preparation of grants, budgets and reports as appropriate.
5. Library Program Development Responsibilities
· Understands and communicates the vision, mission and priorities of the
Libraries in order to move the Libraries and areas toward established goals.
· Participates in the planning and decision-making process for library,
area, and team goals.
· Participates in Library teams as appropriate for the duties of the job and
the expertise of the incumbent.
· Proactively develops strong service ties with primary user groups inside
and outside of the library and other service providers both on and off
campus.
· Focuses on quality service and continuous improvement.
