Curator, Rare Books and Special Collections
The Catholic University of America Libraries


The Catholic University of America, the national university of the Roman 
Catholic Church in the United States, is a community of scholars 
dedicated to research, teaching, learning and service to the Church, the 
nation, and the world. The libraries of The Catholic University of 
America support and enrich the instructional, research, and service 
programs of the University.

The University Libraries seek an experienced, energetic and innovative 
Curator of Rare Books and Special Collections. Reporting to the  
Director of Libraries, the curator is responsible for the planning, 
organizing, and ongoing support of the work of Rare Books and Special 
Collections, and for long-term planning and strategic development of the 
department in support of the fundamental goals of the The Catholic 
University of America Libraries. The Curator serves as the primary 
service contact and resource for one of the university libraries' most 
valuable collections, is responsible for fostering positive donor 
relations, seeking grant funding for preserving and providing access to 
the collections, encouraging user education, performing community 
outreach, and utilizing digital technologies for access and preservation 
of the collections. The holdings of the department, approximately 65,000 
volumes, range from medieval documents to first editions of 20th century 
authors and include nearly 100 incunabula and approximately 100 
manuscripts from the 12th to the 20th century, as well as an extensive 
collection of reference materials on the history of books and printing.

The ideal candidate will hold an ALA-accredited Master's Degree in 
Library Science and a second advanced degree with additional specialized 
course work in rare book and special collections librarianship. 
Experience including five years in rare book librarianship, working with 
the antiquarian book trade and knowledge of the practices, procedures 
and issues related to rare book collections is required. Knowledge of 
the history and literature of the Roman Catholic Church, of 
bibliographic organization and rare book cataloging practices, as well 
as online print and electronic resources for rare books is essential. 
In-depth knowledge of preservation and book conservation related to rare 
books and awareness of current trends in digitizing of unique and rare 
scholarly resources for preservation and access is also required.  

Required skills include: Reading knowledge of Latin and at least one 
modern European language; bibliographic knowledge of Italian, German, 
French, and Greek; ability to formulate long-range plans, to achieve 
intermediate goals, and to establish realistic priorities.  Excellent, 
demonstrated leadership skills; management, organizational, 
communications and interpersonal strengths.
