Annual conference on book-trade history 2005

Organised by Michael Harris, Giles Mandelbrote and Robin Myers
In association with the Antiquarian Booksellers' Association

Friday 25 November & Saturday 26 November 
To be held at the Society of Antiquaries, Burlington House, Piccadilly,
London

Leading book historians will discuss the presence of the book trade in
the streets
and public spaces of Britain and continental Europe. From the Frankfurt
book fair
in the 16th century to the Farringdon Road barrows in the 20th, speakers
will range
across geographical as well as chronological frontiers to follow the
movement of
books and people.
 
John Flood (London University) on the Frankfurt and Leipzig Fairs
Clive Griffin (Trinity College, Oxford) on the itinerant trade in 16th
-century Spain
Michael Harris (London University) on the London barrow trade
Ian Maclean (All Souls College, Oxford) on the shadier side of the trade
between Italy, France and Spain in the late 16th century
John Morris (National Library of Scotland) on Scottish chapmen
Jeroen Salman (Utrecht Institute for History and Culture) on Dutch
chapmen and hawkers in the 17th and 18th centuries
David Stoker (University of Wales) on East-Anglian networks of print,
from 1600 to 1800

Visits will be made to rare book collections in nearby libraries. Tea,
coffee and
a buffet lunch will be provided each day.

Fee for those booking before 31 July will be GBP 80 (GBP 100 after this
date)
Registered students may apply for reduced-rate places, sponsored by the
Bibliographical Society.
