[EXLIBRIS:31718] RE: Gutenberg, Kitten (final word)

Perhaps I should apologize to all the aelurophobes on the List for being the
one responsible for starting this thread.

As invariably happens with such threads, this one has morphed into various
unexpected and startling directions by taking on a life of its own -- in this
case, nine lives.

The hypothetical situation I posited was a philosophical one, and stated
simply:

"If you could save a Gutenberg Bible from a burning building in which a
kitten was also trapped, which one would you rescue -- assuming you could save only
one, not both?"

(If you recall, the reason I chose the Gutenberg Bible, was that my original
question involved the lost books of Livy, which then became the [irrelevant]
subject of the discussion.)

The point again is NOT the Gutenberg Bible. If the choice were changed to
saving the kitten or the Book of Kells, as someone just suggested, I personally
would still save the kitten.

But, hey, that's me.

(And that's the last I will say on the matter).

Fred Schreiber
