Allow me to underscore John Buchtel's brief observation about Rutherford
(Gus) Aris and commend the NY Times obituary to you. Gus was one of those
very rare, bright lights that cross the firmament of our lives. I was
touched by his light from almost my first day on the job at Minnesota and
one of the treasured volumes in my own library is a gift from Gus, his
Explicatio formarum litterarum. I am reminded of Mark Dimunation's talk at
the most recent RBMS preconference--and find a similar catch in my
throat--as we remember those who have touched our lives. Peace, and
thanksgiving, to the memory of Gus Aris.
