Re: Position Announcement - Cornell - 40 lbs of dust

It's extremely common, as anyone who has been looking for a position in the
field for both rare books and manuscripts would have found. Many of the
position descriptions posted on ExLibris have it in one form or another.
I've even seen head of department ones with this caveat. I would say that
this branch of librarianship is extremely unwelcoming to the physically
challenged.

First time I've seen such a physical requirement. And when you think
about it, rather stupid ones at that. I've always thought it fortunate
that ours is a profession which is widely open to those with handicaps,
as it is widely open to those whom Senator Trott Lott refers to as
"women and even minorities".

Required Minimum Qualifications: MLS degree or graduate degree in literature, history, archival management, or other relevant field. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Demonstrated ability to initiate, coordinate and conclude projects with efficiency. Ability to lift 40 lbs. and work with dusty materials.

Will we ever be truly respected as a profession when we require the ability for sustained physical labor and tolerance for working conditions that may cause health problems in the future? Even if there was not the ADA act, it would be nice for those with physical handicaps to be welcomed into the profession if they had the inclination for it. As well as not being forced out when their legs go, like old cart horses
