Don't know about the best, but I've read a few titles over the last six
months or so that I've really enjoyed:
1) THE ADVENTURES OF A TREASURE HUNTER by Charles P. Everitt (Little Brown,
1951). Rather cocky but charming tales from the Americana dealer. A nice
read, rather breezily told.
2) OUTWITTING HISTORY by Aaron Lansky (Algonquin, 2004). The story of how
the author grew from a collector of Yiddish books to the founder of the
National Yiddish Book Center, which has saved over a million Yiddish texts.
Engaging, funny and rather inspiring.
And currently about half-way through...
3) OLD BOOKS IN THE OLD WORLD by Leona Rostenberg and Madeleine B. Stern
(Oak Knoll, 1996). The travel journals of the two booksellers as they
travel postwar Europe buying rare books. Great books and book stories, nice
portraits of many great bookmen, but also a surprisingly moving portrait of
the ruin and recovery of England and Europe.
Happy travels.
Best,
Brian

Subject: Best Memoirs of Book Collectors/Dealers?
I'm looking for summer reading. What would list members recommend as the
best memoirs by rare book collectors or dealers?
