Rick Gekoski told me in SF last year that the change (from TOLKIEN'S GOWN to NABOKOV'S BUTTERFLY) was unauthorized and that he hated it. The U.S. publisher told him they thought that the American reading public would think of Tolkien's bathrobe (and not his academic threads). Rick and I together lamented the disdain that American publishers have recently shown for their readers. I mean, the "philosopher's stone" has deep cultural connotations; what, on the other hand, is a "sorcerer's stone"?
