Re: Best Memoirs of Book Collectors/Dealers

I have enjoyed this thread and look forward to reading Altick's The scholar adventurers. In looking for his book, I found that he has also written an autobiography, A Little Bit of Luck: The Making of an Adventurous Scholar, published by the Xlibris Corporation in Philadelphia in 2002. Xlibris is a self-publishing company, and so, typically, the book has not achieved a wide distribution. I wonder why Altick, who had published so many books with major publishers, including several university presses, chose to go this route. Has anyone read the book?

Altick's The Scholar Adventurers. What a wonderful book!

I read this while a graduate student in the early 1970s before I ever
considered becoming a bookseller. Altick's wonderful prose style stays
with me, after all these years, along with a small handful of books
that reflect their author's love of their subject matter and of
language.
