However a huge amount of information can be gotten
from a properly done digital image, which can save a
lot of research time and wear and tear on the original
object. (I include a measured grey scale and color
scale in each picture I take). In most cases I can
establish the edition and state of a book I have from
proper pictures, and will need to handle another
original many fewer times.
I believe digitization is very cost effective.
