i perfectly agree that originals _must_ be seen. there
are so many tales to tell, like stuff entirely missed
by microfilmers, never mind differences in inks that
can be more than just revelatory, papers, etc. et ad
inf. and of course you'll never know what you've
missed _unless_ you see the originals. cataloguing is
only as 'perfect' as the cataloguer; an index is to a
catalogue as an indexer is to a cataloguer. also if
you ask for a repro of specific things, how
potentially embarrassing not to have turned the page,
or seen the next (or preceding) item! sometimes
libraries refuse to allow you to view the original if
there is a microform. shame unto them!
