It would be of interest, at least to me, to have some information as
to how the mss got into the library, how long they've been there, and
why a nobleman feels they belong to him.

It would be helpful if someone who can read German would summarize the facts at http://archiv.twoday.net and from the library website. My English is unfortunately not quite good.

The Badische Landesbibliothek was before 1918 the Großherzogliche
Hofbibliothek, the PUBLIC library of the Baden Großherzogtum = state.
A lot of mss. was "robbed" in 1802 and the following years from the
monasteries.

There was no doubt until now that since 1918 the mss. were property of
the state (Baden, now Baden-Wuerttemberg). The Deutsche
Forschungsgemeinschaft would not have given a lot of money for
cataloging mss. of unclear status.
