I received only 3 responses from my query last July [see below] and 4
requests to please share the results of my survey.
Only 3 replies is hardly a representative sampling for statistical
purposes.
If any of you planned to respond but consider it too late, I'd really
like to hear from you. I promise I will share results if this plea
results in my receiving information to share.
If you don't have any tracking for uncataloged materials, or if
materials as they are received go directly to cataloging I'd be
interesting in learning that as well. I'll appreciate receiving any
comments you might be willing to share with me.

Subject: FW: Security for uncataloged rare books
When you acquire rare books, archives, and other materials destined to
be housed in your Special Collections area do they go directly to
cataloging? or are they immediately sent to Special Collections?
If materials are sent directly to Special Collections for the
Librarian/Curator to review before cataloging, do you have a control
system to know what is in the cataloging department? (i.e. a listing of
materials sent, including title date sent, which is updated when
materials are cataloged and returned.)
We have been maintaining a log of materials leaving the dept. for
cataloging, but the listing has been brought into question because of
the time it takes to keep it current. Would any of you be willing to
share how you handle incoming materials before they are cataloged and if
you maintain a sort of "tracking system" if they leave your area?
