?Passages in the New World? Exhibit to Open October 13 at Cushing Library

?Passages in the New World: Books and Manuscripts from Colonial Mexico, 1556-1820? will open at Cushing Memorial Library & Archives, a division of the Texas A&M University Libraries, on October 13th at 4:00 pm.  Open to the public, this exhibit features over 40 books and manuscripts produced in colonial Mexico in the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries.  It includes items printed by the first printer in the Americas, Juan Pablos, who was printing in Mexico City nearly a century before the first book was printed in New England.  The exhibit contains a sampling of highlights from the Colonial Mexican Imprint Collection   This collection contains over 1,300 book and manuscripts spanning nearly three centuries and covering all aspects of life, literature and culture in Colonial Mexico. It was acquired with funding from The Crawley Family Foundation, Ben and Betty Huss, and The Hamill Foundation. 
 
?This exhibit provides only a small glimpse of the immense research possibilities that await students and scholars inside the Colonial Mexican Imprint Collection? commented Victor Arizpe, Head of the Department of Hispanic Studies at Texas A&M University.  ?This collection stands as a landmark acquisition that underscores the importance of the study of Humanities at Texas A&M University.?

Gregory Lee Cuellar, Curator of the Colonial Mexican Imprint Collection, and Nancy Joe Dyer, Professor of Hispanic Studies, will officially open the exhibit by speaking briefly about some of the important books and manuscripts on display.  Catalogues of this expansive exhibit will also be available.  The exhibit and accompanying catalogue are made possible by support from the Melbern G. Glasscock Center for Humanities Research, the Department of Hispanic Studies, the Department of English, the
