I'm hoping someone can help me identify two sermons lacking title pages
and other preliminaries. Email me for scans of the items.
The first is on Coloss. IV. 15; after the verse, it begins "The Church
in the House of Aquila, Rom. 16,5." It is in a volume with several
sermons by John Henley (1692-1756) printed in London ca. 1730. The
table of contents identifies it as by Henley as does the University of
Chicago (OCLC 40210356). This copy has p. 5-21, [1] (8vo: B-C4 D1).
There is a catch-word at the foot of p. 21 so there may well be leaves
missing at the end as well.
The second is on Jeremiah XVIII. 7, 8, 9, 10, 11; there is an unhelpful
caption title: "A Sermon." After the verses and a greeting, the sermon
begins "As a merciful God, the Creator, and supreme Governor of the
Universe, ever regards the Inhabitants of this earthly Globe with an Eye
of Pity and Compassion..." The other pamphlets in the volume were
published from the 1660s to the 1790s, so that's no help. The collation
is p. [1]-17, [1] p. (4to: A-C2 D3). I'm not sure about the format; the
chain lines are horizontal, but it looks like an octavo. P. 10 mentions
the French moving into the Ohio valley and on p. 17, "May the Endeavours
of His Honour our Lieutenant Governor, at this Treaty, be blessed, to
engage the Indian Nations in our Interest." So, I'm guessing it was
printed 1753 or 1754, maybe in New York. Also, it has several extended
quotations from Paradise Lost. Could it be the one by Frielinghuysen,
printed by Parker and Weyman, 1754?
Thanks for the help,
Patrick
