Re: Is there anything comparable to the BBTI for the Paris book trade?

Dear Bob,

You probably don't remember me, but I remember you and your book-lined
Paris kitchen.... many years ago, when I worked at the BN. By the
catalogue of Tolbiac's holdings of sales catalogues, I take it you are
referring to Blechet's Répertoire...? Do you know whether the sales
catalogues are listed online, in Opale?

I must buy your book, which I had intended to do but am now reminded --
just discovered your online index and appendices - fantastic. I never
did finish my study of the Imprimerie polytype (children and life got in
the way), for which I am in André Jammes' doghouse... maybe one day.

Best regards,

Nina Musinsky

there are all sorts of resources. but you'd want to
look at the latest edition [2004] of jean-dominique
mellot, with queval [i forget her first name],
_repertoire d'imprimeurs / libraires..._, published by
the bnf. it has thousands of entries for the early
period (up to 1810), everywhere, but concentrates on
france, _and_ there is a very extensive and thorough
bib on the topos. if you don't have it locally, you'd
want to buy it.

p.s. amazingly [to me], oclc only lists 4 usa
libraries as holding this indispensable book. the
older editions might just as well be tossed.
p.p.s. on early sales catalogues, for france, teh
grolier has of course a wonderful library but its
holdings don't hold a candle to the bnf's. there is a
book-cat. of/on tolbiac's holding. the manuscript cat.
of ditto in the arsenal is _must_ reading (not just
consulting: _reading_) for anyone interested in that
topic [ignored by the author of the bn book]. and in
case anyone might be interested, there is an appendix
in my recent book (_confiscations at customs..._)
centered on _banned books sold at auction_, plus
something in the main text.
