The long 19th century is typically held to be from 1789 to 1914. Wouldn't that entail that the 18th ended with the French Revolution and that the 20th began with with World War I? In other words, if some centuries are "long," don't others then have to be "short"?

I propose the following occidentocentric breakdown:

1492 (Columbus) - 1588 (Spanish Armada) = 16th
1588 - 1688 (Glorious Revolution) = 17th
1688 - 1789 = 18th
1789 - 1914 = 19th
1914 - 9/11/2001 = 20th
9/11/2001 ... = 21st
