Re: How to store old news papers.

I would recommend preservation microfilming and digitization for access searchability - microfilm having the advantage of not being technology dependent it still beats any digital format for preservation. Extensive use of the paper copies of high-acid newsprint is problematic at best; though there are cases where only the "real thing" will do, using the digital version will limit the wear and tear (and crumble). Plus, patrons these days seem to assume that "it's all online."

I will defer to the expertise of the list on the best means of acid stabilization and perhaps encapsulation to preserve the originals.

Subject: [EXLIBRIS-L] How to store old news papers.

I recently purchased some 1950 news papers at a estate sale and I was wondering what would be the best was to preserve them. I would like to have them accessible to library patrons, but I also what to protect them. Since my library does not usually keep periodicals for extended periods of time I am at a lose. Any helpful suggestions?
Thanks,
