Actually, I remember Gabriel from back then. He was always
authoritative, friendly and helpful. .
I remember raving about some masters thesis about early American wood
engraving, which I then collected, and Mr. Schultz took it away from
me rather than let me buy it-I was at the counter ready to check out-
in order to reprice it. Gabriel never did anything like that, nor
would he have thought of it. So, while he may not have been
publishing Wittenborn's stuff anymore, he was doing the art community
good by being in charge. He was a fine replacement for Mr. Schultz.
Schultz was so insecure about his knowledge that he could be
frightened out of his original opinion and price on a book by an over
enthusiastic customer. Gabriel knew what he was doing.
