Re: British Library and The Tyldesley D [destroying contexts

it was sad to hear about the mistreatment of the T.
diary, but i think that story has to be set within a
larger context. the bl has for years been destroying
the context of their books [at least french ones] by
rebinding, throwing away the original binding
[!!!!!!], trimming the leaves [!!!!!!] so that
watermarks are gone, etc., and that at _tremendous_
expense. i long ago suggested [to someone high up in
the admin ladder] that at least the remnants of
bindings [etc.] be put in an envelop [archival!], with
the same shelf-mark as the book, so that lesdits
remains cld be available to scholars who cared. but
maybe all that has changed now; i certainly hope so.
this is _not_ a reflection on the librarians /
archivists / scholars employed by the bl; most [all?]
_do_ care, but caring has to be backed by funding, and
coherent policies.
my 2 cents.
