Dear colleagues
I?m writing a short article about the owner history of our first edition copy of Newton?s Principia Mathematica for our new exhibition and have some difficulties identifying a stamp on the title page.
As to the known previous owners: On the title page, at the bottom, there is a stamp with the name of Prof. Ernst Mach as well as his handwritten signature next to it (the book was bought from Mach?s widow after his death). At the top of the page, there is the handwritten note, presumably written by Mach, ?Aus Purkinje?s Bibliothek (i.e. the Czech scientist Jan Evangelista Purkynì).
The stamp in question is round with a globe mounted on a bearing or stand in the middle. Around the top half is the motto in capitals ?NATURAE ET PATRIAE?. We think that it might be a library stamp, as right next to it is another stamp ?Doublette?, but have been unable to find out from which library or institute (or maybe it is related to one of the previous owners??).
If you have any suggestions about the origin of the stamp or where I could look it up, I?d be very grateful.
Thanks and best regards
